“We are very excited to welcome Coach Pomfret home to Carroll,” CHS principle Matt Sableski said in a news release. “His ties to the Carroll community and vast array of successful coaching experiences make him the ideal person to lead our football program. We are very excited about the future of Patriot football under his leadership.”
Pomfret spent six years in the U.S. Army after graduation, serving overseas in Iraq and Egypt, before embarking on a coaching career that includes time as a high school coach in Texas, junior-college coach in New Mexico and as a graduate assistant at the University of Texas.
“I am tremendously excited and sincerely honored to return home to Archbishop Carroll High School and Patriot Football in this capacity,” Pomfret said in a news release. “Carroll boasts a proud football tradition and a dedicated community to support it. We will redefine Patriot Football and build a consistently competitive program that produces teams who will be remembered for their successes on and off the field.”
Pomfret, who played for the legendary Steve Bartlett at Carroll, will succeed Cody Byrd, who resigned in November after leading the Patriots to a 4-6 season. They ended the year on a six-game losing streak after starting 4-0. Carroll was 14-41 in six seasons under Byrd.
At West Carrollton, the new man in charge is Jerel Freeman, whose “wealth of experience, a passion for leadership, and a proven track record of success both on and off the field” was praised in a news release from the school.
Freeman was the head coach at Jefferson from 2011-13 when the Broncos went 10-18, but more recently he has coached receivers at Trotwood-Madison, helping mold two state championship teams.
He is also a three-time GWOC South Coach of the Year in track and field and will be employed as a restorative justice coach at West Carrollton.
The school district announced Wednesday that Freeman’s hiring had been approved by the school board.
“I’m honored to join the West Carrollton community and lead the Pirates football program,” Freeman said in a release. “My goal is to create an environment where every student-athlete can reach their full potential as an athlete and as a person. Together, we will strive for excellence in all we do.”
He will replace Anthony Parker, who led the Pirates to a 3-17 record in two seasons.
