Fiery crash near I-70: Semi, SUV collide, burst into flames; Ohio 41 closed

Fire, EMS and law enforcement teams were at the scene of a fiery crash Friday morning on the southeast side of Springfield in Clark County.

A semi truck and an SUV burst into flames after colliding on Ohio 41, at the Interstate 70 exit ramp intersection on the north side of I-70.

Law enforcement was notified of the crash at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to Springfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“A passenger vehicle struck the side of a semi in the area of the saddlebag tanks and had a rupture of the saddlebag tank to cause a fire,” said Springfield Twp. Fire Department Deputy Chief James Allen.

The occupants of both vehicles escaped with minor injuries. The driver of the SUV was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center and the semi driver was checked out at the scene but refused care, Allen said.

The semi truck was empty, and Allen said there was a diesel fuel release of 50 to 70 gallons to mitigate the hazard.

Ohio 41 was closed in both directions at 9 a.m. Allen said it would remain closed for at least three to four hours while they get the trucks moved. He said the Ohio Department of Transportation has some “extensive repairs” to do to the road because of the fire.

Springfield Twp. emergency crews responded to the scene as well as city of Springfield and Harmony Twp. to assist.
