U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, has been ousted from his position as chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Turner was reportedly removed from the powerful committee chairman’s seat by House Speaker Mike Johnson, a fellow Republican.

He has served on the committee since 2015 and had been the top Republican on the committee since the start of 2023. Because he is no longer the chairman, he will not serve on the committee.

Here’s a look at Turner’s political career.

1994-2002: Mayor of Dayton

In 1993, Turner decided to run for Dayton mayor. In a generally Democratic city, Turner defeated Democrat Clay Dixon, winning by 434 votes out of 44,104 ballots cast.

Serving eight years as mayor, Turner worked to drive redevelopment projects, including the Dayton Dragons stadium, the Schuster Center and a revamped riverfront park.

Turner lost his bid for a third term in November 2001.

2003-2013: Representative, Ohio 3rd District

In 2002, Turner ran for the Congressional seat long held by Democrat Tony Hall, who left for a United Nations appointment.

Turner served on the House Armed Services and Government Reform committees.

As part of the Armed Services Committee, Turner served on the Strategic Forces and Tactical Air and Land subcommittees.

In 2005, Turner also joined the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.

In 2011, Turner was appointed Chairman of the U.S. Delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly

2013-present: Representative, Ohio 10th District

After redistricting, Turner’s district was renumbered the 10th district. It absorbed much of the neighboring 7th district, which resulted in a district that included all of Dayton.

In December of 2014, Turner was elected President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He served in that role until 2016.

He now serves as Vice Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Turner was appointed to the House Intelligence Committee in 2015.

He was named Chairman of the committee in 2023, making him Dayton’s first elected official to serve in a leadership role on a national security committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Turner currently sits on the Oversight and Accountability Committee. That committee works to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and accountability of the federal government and all its agencies.

Turner also remains a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee.

He is next up for reelection in 2026.
