Multiple flights to and from Washington, D.C. were canceled at Dayton International Airport Thursday following a fatal crash involving a commercial jet and military helicopter.

An American Airlines jet heading to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Army helicopter collided midair over the Potomac River around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials said they believe everyone onboard is dead and crews have transitioned efforts from a rescue mission to a recovery mission Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported.

At least 28 people were recovered from the Potomac River as of Thursday morning.

Three soldiers were on the helicopter and the commercial jet could carry up to 70 passengers, according to AP.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those involved in the incident near Reagan National Airport,” said Melissa Patsiavos, marketing and air services development manager at the City of Dayton Department of Aviation. “We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones, families and everyone affected by this tragedy. We will continue to support our partners at PSA Airlines and offer any assistance they may need.”

Patsiavos said there were some cancelations and delays at Dayton International Airport due to the crash.

“We always recommend checking with your airline for updated flight information,” she added.
