A Beavercreek company has won a large Air Force Research Laboratory contract to help the Air Force bolster its electronic warfare defenses.

Riverside Research Institute — headquartered in Fairfax, Va., but with Beavercreek offices — was awarded a $48.9 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for electromagnetic spectrum enhancement.

This contract provides for improvement of multiple systems or infrastructures, the Department of Defense said in a new contract announcement.

Work will be performed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and is expected to be complete by Jan. 24, 2030.

This contract was a competitive acquisition, and one offer was received, the DOD said.

One tenet of the nation’s security strategy is achieving electromagnetic superiority. Wars can be fought in the air, on the land, at sea, in space and cyberspace — and on the electromagnetic spectrum.

U.S. military leaders have watched as Russian and Ukrainian forces attempt to jam each other, trying to stop drone movements and block signals.

Last year, the Air Force created two squadrons focused on electromagnetic spectrum operations, the 563rd Electronic Warfare Squadron, at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and the 388th Electronic Warfare Squadron, at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

“Electromagnetic spectrum operations are a significant part of how we operate,” Gen. Ken Wilsbach, commander of Air Combat Command, said last year.

The contract came from AFRL’s Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at Wright-Patterson.

Riverside Research opened its first Dayton-area office in 1998 to pursue contracts at Wright-Patterson. In 2010, the company consolidated workers from several Dayton-area locations to it facility at 2640 Hibiscus Way in Beavercreek.

A message seeking comment was sent to Riverside.

Another recent local contract win: The University of Dayton Research Institute, the University of Texas at Arlington, Blue Halo Co. (formerly UES Inc.) and ARCTOS Technology Solutions LLC, both of Beavercreek, were awarded a $97 million contract for aerospace materials processing, performance and characterization, the DOD also said.

This contract provides for “the processing, behavior characterization, and performance prediction of advanced aerospace materials,” the department said.

Work will also be performed at Wright-Patterson, with completion expected by Jan. 23, 2035.

Again, the contract came from AFRL’s Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.

In 2023, UES Inc. joined Arlington Capital Partners’ Eqlipse Technologies as a founding member. Blue Halo was an Arlington Capital Partners portfolio company. In November, AeroVironment, Inc. acquired BlueHalo in an all-stock transaction valued at about $4 billion. UES is now Blue Halo, the company’s web site says.

A company spokesman said the company still works in Beavercreek.
