Dayton police shoot 1 after armed man reportedly flees crash

A Dayton police officer shot a man after a reported confrontation during a crash investigation Thursday afternoon.

The man was transported to the hospital and was in surgery, Dayton police Chief Kamran Afzal said. Additional information about his condition was not available.

Around 1:17 p.m. Thursday, officers came upon a crash on West Third Street.

As they pulled up, a man started leaving on foot and police followed him to Williams Street.

“What we can tell right now is the officers saw the individual with a handgun in his hand,” Afzal said. “The individual was confronted and during that confrontation one of our officers discharged his firearm, hitting the individual.”

Officers then provided medical care until medics arrived and transported the man to the hospital.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Two Dayton officers responded, but only one fired, the chief said.

Afzal requested the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office investigate the shooting, as well as the crash.

Once the investigation is completed Dayton Police Department will complete an administrative investigation.

Afzal said crews are reviewing video and will likely provide another update on Friday.

No officers were injured.
