The Neon in downtown Dayton continued its annual tradition of offering a free movie screening in conjunction with the observation and celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, this year’s featured film, “The Six Triple Eight”, tells the story of World War II’s first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, led by the late Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley, who moved to Dayton in the 1950s and became very active in the community. Judi Early, daughter of Charity Adams Early, held a discussion/Q&A with attendees facilitated by The Neon’s manager Jonathan McNeal. TOM GILLIAM / CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER
