The current space was built in 1967 and named Truslow Commons, named for the first head of school. MVS says the area needs updating and plans to add a second floor to the space, which will add more than 5,200 square feet.
The new area will be called the Indira & B.K. Reddy Student Union, for a couple who donated extensively to the school.
MVS has raised 70% of its $6.5 million goal for construction, but the school said in a press release that it is still seeking partnerships with businesses and foundation through grants and in-kind support to complete the project.
MVS said $2 million has been set aside in the school’s endowment to maintain the affordability of the new dining program and ensure the longevity of the renovations.
“We are designing an environment where students can thrive academically and socially, preparing them to lead boldly in a rapidly changing world,” said David Long, head of school.
The addition has plans to include a college counseling room. Currently, the school says the college counselors meet with students in a small, windowless room.
“This new space will reflect the excellence of our school and help students like me feel confident and supported as we plan for the future,” said MVS junior Andreas Lemus-Joshi.
The plan includes space for what the school calls an “innovation center.”
“As someone passionate about science and technology, I can’t wait to have a space where we can turn ideas into reality,” MVS student Sydney Wright said. “This suite will allow us to collaborate, experiment, and engage with cutting-edge tools that will prepare us for the future.”
