A man wanted in a Dayton homicide surrendered to police after a heavy law enforcement presence was reported in Dayton late Thursday morning.

Multiple Dayton police crews and SWAT responded to a house in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Boulevard to assist U.S. marshals.

The marshals tried to speak to the man, but he refused to leave the house, Dayton police Sgt. Creigee S. Coleman said.

SWAT crews surrounded the house and used different methods to try to get the man to come outside. Coleman said crews used commands, tried knocking on the door, face-to-face-communication, telephones and even drones to try to convince the man to leave.

When that didn’t work, SWAT fired tear gas into the house and the man came outside.

Due to the tear gas, the man was taken to the hospital to be decontaminated, Coleman said. No injuries were reported.

A woman and child were also in the house initially, but they left and were in a safe location prior to crews using tear gas, the sergeant said.

It is not clear how the woman and man know each other or how long he was at the house.

Residents from other homes in the area were asked to shelter in place or allowed to leave their houses while crews worked to get the man outside.

Coleman praised the cooperation between the U.S. Marshals Service, Dayton police, SWAT and hostage negotiation team.

He said it was a successful operation, with the man surrendering peacefully and no one injured at the scene.

Angelo Jamille Champion Sr., 42, was arrested in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Boulevard around 1:20 p.m. Thursday, according to Miami Valley Jails booking records.

Champion is facing murder, felonious assault and having weapons while under disability charges in connection to a fatal shooting on Nov. 23.

Police were responding to a shooting in the 4600 block of Forsythe Avenue when a 911 caller reported a vehicle crashed into a house in the 1900 block of Arlene Avenue and a man in the back seat had been shot, according to Dayton Municipal Court records.

Officers determined Champion was at a party on Forsythe Avenue when he reportedly got into an argument with 34-year-old Djuan Hill.

Hill got into an SUV with his friend and Champion walked over to the vehicle and pointed a gun at the door where Hill was sitting and fired one time, according to court documents.

The driver fled with Hill still in the SUV and hit another vehicle before crashing into the house on Arlene Avenue.

Hill had a gunshot wound to his head and died from his injuries on Nov. 24, an affidavit read.
