A Fairborn man who previously pleaded guilty in connection to a four-vehicle OVI crash in Vandalia will serve jail time and temporarily lose his driver’s license.

Ryan W. Ross, 24, was sentenced to two years and had his license suspended for three years, according to Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records.

The two years are to be served following a sentence of three to four and a half years for a drug conviction in Greene County.

Ross also will be on parole for one to three years.

On Aug. 5, 2023, Ross was reportedly driving a 2018 Dodge Charger north in the 8400 block of South Brown School Road when he hit a 2018 Chevrolet pickup truck head-on while trying to pass a 2014 Honda CR-V.

The Charger then side-swiped the Honda and hit a 2018 Ford Focus, according to a Vandalia Division of Police crash report.

Ross previously pleaded guilty to vehicular assault and a misdemeanor OVI charge, according to court records. An aggravated vehicular assault charge was dismissed.

Ross’s defense sought a one-year sentence.

They claimed he was having an argument with his child’s mother which escalated “to a point where defendant’s ‘in the moment’ decisions led to a series of events that no one could have anticipated nor wanted to happen,” according to court records.

Ross had a punctured lung, concussion, severed aorta and multiple broken bones, including five ribs, a femur, collarbone and ankle, according to a memo filed by the defense. He was hospitalized for more than four weeks and was in an induced coma for five days.

The prosecution asked the court for a two-year sentence. They noted one of the victims in the crash was a full-time firefighter for 24 years who had to medically retire.

He had 12 broken vertebrae and bulging disks that left him disabled and dependent on a cane to walk, according to a memo filed by the prosecution. He also had broken ribs, internal bleeding, a broken nose and long-term concussion syndrome, short-term memory issues and mental health issues from the crash.

Two others were also reportedly injured in the crash. One man had minor injuries and a woman had a broken leg that needed surgery.
