Library to honor local activist, radio host dedicated to civil rights

Dayton Metro Library will celebrate the legacy of Daytonian Joe Madison with a special dedication ceremony and reception from 2-4 p.m. Feb. 1, at the West Branch, where the Branch’s Tech Studio will be named in his honor.

Madison is a well-respected activist celebrated for his dedication to history; human, civil, and voting rights; and radio broadcasting. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1967, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Madison passed away on Jan. 31, 2024, at his home in Washington, D.C.

All ages are invited to celebrate the Branch’s dedication ceremony. The West Branch is located at 300 Abbey Ave. Registration is not required.

School to host panel discussion about women in sports and leadership

Dayton Public Schools (DPS) Athletics will host “Who’s In the Jersey?” event at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Ponitz Career Technology Center, 742 Washington St.

The Dayton community is invited to attend the third annual “Who’s in the Jersey?” event, a panel discussion honoring girls and women in sports and their journey beyond the jersey. This event is being held in conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Guests include MaShonda Moxely, DaQuawna Dunnican, Angela Davis, Kevicia Brown, Dr. Samantha Bates and Cherry Ridley. The discussion will be moderated by DPS Chief of Athletics Victoria Jones.

Those attending will have the opportunity to win raffles and prizes.

Library patrons can learn about their tenant rights

Dayton Metro Library will host the Dayton Tenant Union and Legal Aide forTenant Rights & Responsibilities on the Road” at several branches.

This program will review the resources that are available when approaching a housing crisis and go over how to review a lease. With this information, patrons will be empowered and better understand their rights and responsibilities as renters in Dayton. Childcare will also be provided at this event.

Local attorney appointed to park board

Five Rivers MetroParks welcomes Jessica K. Turner to its board of park commissioners. Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Probate Division Judge David D. Brannon appointed Turner on Jan. 10.

Turner will work alongside current board member Bear Monita (now vice president) and newly appointed president of the board of park commissioners Jessica Salem.

Turner is a local attorney at Bricker Graydon LLP representing private and public clients in transactional matters. A Dayton native, Turner graduated from Miami University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and political science. In addition to her JD, she holds a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Master of Laws in International Business Law.

Turner currently also serves on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami Valley and the Advisory Board of the Miami Valley Urban League.

Turner replaces Karen L. Davis, RN, BSN, MBA, who recently retired from the board after 28 years of service and leadership to Five Rivers MetroParks.

Library to hold STE(A)M programs

Kids of all ages can enjoy a variety of STEM and STEAM programs taking place at several Dayton Metro Library Branches through the rest of the month, some of which are even hosted by special guests.

Earthquake Challenge, 6-7 p.m. Monday at Brookville Branch. Engineer a tower that can withstand an earthquake. Registration is required. (Grades 1-4)

Stargazing for All, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at Miami Twp. Branch. Enjoy an evening under the night sky with telescopes provided by Five Rivers MetroParks. Dress in warm clothing. Registration is required for weather updates. For all ages.

Rockets, Planets, and Telescope, 4-5 p.m. Tuesday at Trotwood Branch. Boonshoft Museum of Discovery drops by to teach students how to put a basic telescope together. Explore how rockets work and discover the scale of major objects. (Grades 1-4)

STEAM Supreme, 6-6:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, and Feb. 13, 20, and 27 at E.C. Doren Branch. Dive into this dynamic program to ignite curiosity and inspire creativity. Each week offers a diverse range of activities. Drop by to see what is happening! (Grades 1-4)

The Foodbank’s outdoor Mobile Pantry is tentatively scheduled for Thursday at Englewood Christian Assembly Church.

Winners announced of annual marketing scholarship

TriComB2B has announced the winners of their third annual Marketing Pathway Scholarship for Dayton Public Schools students. TriComB2B developed a portfolio review and competition which gave participating students a chance to showcase their creativity and uncover skills that could be applied to a career in marketing. Students from Meadowdale Career Technology Center and the David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center were asked to develop a portfolio showcasing their best work, which included: at least two examples of creative expression, a short personal introduction and a writing sample of their choice.

Winning entries showcased their talents in web and digital design, creative writing, video production, live performance and photography.

Five students from the two schools were awarded a total of $7,000 in scholarship prizes as follows:

Freshman wins Dottie Yeck Good Life award

Oakwood High School announced the accomplishments of its students in the 2024 Dottie Yeck Good Life Awards, sponsored by the Washington-Centerville Public Library.

The Dottie Yeck Good Life Award program encourages young writers to reflect on values that promote positivity, kindness and personal growth.

Lilith Delapasse, a freshman, earned the Good Life Award Winner title and the top prize of $3,000 for her essay. Ten additional freshmen earned recognition for placing in the top 25 out of 863 essays, the top 2%.

Two additional Oakwood also students placed in the competition:

Johannah Meyer, third place ($350); and Kate S., fourth place ($250).

Students who received honorable mentions include: Chloe Bretz, Elijah Cox, Ava Flansburg, John Frazier, Alex Lee, Reese Lounsbury, Graham Pontzloff and Elizabeth Steipp.

Superintendent honored as leader of distinction finalist

Oakwood City Schools Superintendent Neil Gupta was recognized as a Leader of Distinction Finalist by District Administration Leadership Institution.

Gupta was honored during an awards ceremony in December along with eight other recipients. He also was named one of the Top 100 Administrators in 2024 by District Administration.

Master the ABCs of creative writing

Local author Robert Irvin will visit the Woodbourne Library at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6, to discuss his book The ABCs of Creative Writing. Irvin is a professional editor and writer who has worked in all levels of newspaper reporting and editing, magazine writing, and in publishing. Writing with Randy C. Dockens, their goal is to help writers on their path to being better authors.

Irvin will take questions after his presentation, and copies of his book will be available for purchase after the event.

BELLBROOK

BSCSC to close for move to new location

The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center, at 51 S. East St., will be closed Feb. 3-18 for their move to a new location.

On Feb. 18, the BSCSC will reopen in the new location at 46 E. Franklin St.

WARREN COUNTY

Park district welcomes new commissioner

The Warren County Park District welcomed its newest commissioner Chris Hice to his first meeting earlier this month.

Hice is a Waynesville resident and landscape architect with more than 25 years of experience. He is involved with organizations including the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association, Ohio Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects, Waynesville Chamber and Old Main Street Committee.

He was recently appointed to the board following the departure of commissioner Jeff Blazey, who served for 12 years in the role.

The board of park commissioners is a three-person, volunteer board that governs the park district. Commissioners serve staggered three-year terms are are appointed by the county probate judge.

FRANKLIN

Kindergarten registration will begin April 14

Franklin City Schools announced that kindergarten registration for the 2025-26 school year will begin April 14 for all students turning 5 on or before Aug. 1.

Parents or guardians should complete the online preregistration process beginning April 7. For those who do not have a computer, one will be available at the Welcome Center, 754 E. Fourth St., Franklin. Once the online registration is completed you will be required to make an appointment, beginning April 14.

The following documents are required for registration:

  • original birth certificate;
  • shot/immunization records;
  • parent/guardian driver’s license;
  • proof of residency (rental/lease agreement, settlement statement, land/purchase contract, copy of deed, electric or water bill). The items listed are the only items that will be accepted.
  • Custody papers/court-ordered placement.

Students will not be admitted until they have met all of the above requirements. Anyone with questions can call Central Registration at 937-743-8602.
