A new restaurant is preparing to open for business in the Springboro shopping center anchored by Dorothy Lane Market.

Wasabi, owned by Skywasabi Inc., has received zoning permit approval for a restaurant at 784 N. Main St., the site of a former China Cottage location, in the Marketplace of Settlers Walk, Springboro Planner Dan Boron said.

Xiong Wei, who identified himself as co-owner of the property, said this week the target date for restaurant opening is about four months away.

The restaurant has signed a 10-year lease for the site, Wei said.

A Springboro zoning application filed by Qingrong Cheng of Lebanon was submitted in October, city records show. Cheng is the agent for Skywasabi Inc., which registered as a business Oct. 1, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office website.

Attempts to reach Cheng were unsuccessful.

A banner on the building says, “Wasabi Japanese Cuisine Coming Soon!”

There is a Wasabi Steak & Sushi restaurant with four locations in northeast Ohio, but it is not yet clear whether the Springboro location will be related.

China Cottage closed at the end of last year at that address, saying it planned to relocate.

“Big changes are on the horizon,” a China Cottage sign stated at that time. “As our lease in our current Springboro location concludes at the end of this year, we are gearing up for an incredible relocation.”

An inquiry last month on the China Cottage Facebook page about that restaurant possibly relocating in Springboro received the following response from the business:

“I wish we had more information at the moment, but we’re currently working hard to build and create the perfect space for our customers. Thank you for your patience and please stay tuned and connected for updates. We’ll share more information as soon as we have an ETA on the opening.”
