UPDATE: Missing Dayton man killed in Trotwood pedestrian strike

A missing 83-year-old Dayton man died after he was hit by a vehicle in Trotwood Friday morning.

Around 12:45 a.m., Dayton police asked for the public’s help locating Ernest Gray.

He was last seen around 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the 4500 block of Saint Johns Avenue. Gray had dementia, according to police.

Police released an update saying Gray had been located around 7:45 a.m. The department confirmed he was killed in a pedestrian strike early Friday afternoon.

“Tragically, he was the pedestrian who was struck and killed in a crash this morning in the area of state Route 49 and West Third Street in Trotwood,” a statement read.

At 4:49 a.m. Trotwood police responded to pedestrian strike at Ohio 49 and West Third Street.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Gray, dead in the roadway.

The driver called 911 and said they didn’t see the male coming, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch records.

“This guy ran right out in front of us and I hit him,” the caller said.

They told dispatch they didn’t think he was breathing.

An investigator from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed they were called to respond.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
