The Macy’s anchor department store at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek is set to close early this year, one of 66 sites that the department store chain announced closures for Thursday.

Macy’s announced that it would shutter 150 Macy’s stores across the country last February, as part of a plan to restructure the company around 350 “go-forward” locations.

The Macy’s store at the Dayton Mall — the only other Macy’s in the region — was not on the closure list the company released. One other Ohio Macy’s store is also set to close, located at Franklin Park in Toledo.

While there is not an exact date listed for the Beavercreek store’s closure, Macy’s said the majority of the 66 locations are expected to close during the first three months of 2025.

Macy’s is on the west side of the Fairfield Commons Mall complex (the side away from North Fairfield Road). The store opened in 1994 (then called Lazarus), almost a year after the mall itself opened, in late 1993. The number of jobs at the affected store was not immediately available.

In December, Macy’s reported that its third-quarter net sales decreased 2.4% to $4.7 billion, following a trend of declining sales for the retail chain.

Investments in Macy’s pilot “First 50″ stores, as well as luxury brands Bloomingdale’s, and Blue Mercury, have boosted sales, according to the company, but those are offset by weak sales in other locations.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s.

The Mall at Fairfield Commons lost one previous anchor in 2018 when Elder-Beerman closed on the north side of the mall. That site had a few temporary uses, and an unrealized 2021 effort to turn it into office space. But now a large Dick’s House of Sport store is going into that space.
